A Spy in Canaan: My Life As a Jewish-American Businessman Spying for Israel in Arab Lands
Published in Hardcover by Birch Lane Pr (July, 1993)
Authors: Howard H. Schack and H. Paul Jeffers
Average review score:

I Can't Believe He Hasn't Been Assassinated!
This was one of the most interesting books I ever read. Even though he has changed the names of everyone, certainly all the people mentioned would recognize themselves and what fools have been made of them. I would think that they, and their governments, would all be out for revenge. This is really a tell-all book of spy methods. I am surprised that it isn't classified, and I would think that it might seriously compromise our own spies in the area of national security, unless spy methods have really changed a lot since that time, and all these methods have become obsolete. But I don't think so, as they mostly involve people skills. Nevertheless, I am thinking about writing a novel,a nd a lot of the information I was searching for was found here. An amazing, exciting book. Hard to put down. As it is out of print, I ordered it used through one of the used booksellers in Amazon.com. I recommend you do the smae. The book I received was in excellent condition, and I'm glad I read it.

An intelligent memoir about hitherto unrevealed intelligence
Espionage is commonly defined as "that part of the total intelligence designed for the surreptitious inspection of the activities of foreign countries to ascertain their strength and movements and to communicate such intelligence to the proper authorities. "If only for security purposes, all nations feel the need to discover, by their own concealed methods, the guarded secrets of others. Or as Winston Churchill once wittily remarked: "Sometimes liberty requires a bodyguard of lies." To establish the personality traits of the "ideal" spy central to the anatomy of espionage is obviously far from simple. A fine study of intelligence gathering catalogs, for example, some 10 traits the "good" intelligence agent must necessarily posess, in order to qualify for his precarious , oftimes life-threatening, assignment. Notable among them, an intelligence agent should be "discreet, have a passion for anonymity, and know how to keep his mouth shut, and preserve a secret. The most effective spy, Mr. Schack shows us is neither freak nor pschopath. He is rather, the 'citizenspy' who acts upon the incentive of enlightened patriotism and to whom deceit and intrigue are only temporary expedients that he knows how to keep under strict control. One such "citizen intelligence agent" was Howard Schack, a highly sucessful American engineer and with a worldwide reputation as a master builder of military installations around the globe. In his fascinating memoir, A Spy in Canaan, Mr. Schack explains his stake in the survival of Israel while serving for fifteen years with Israel's CIA, the Mossad.

Stages on Life's Way : Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol 11
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (01 November, 1988)
Authors: Sren Kierkegaard, Soren Kierkegaard, Howard Vincent Hong, and Edna H. Hong
Average review score:

One of the greatest books ever written
For a long time, _Stages on Life's Way_ sat atop the list of my favorite books of all time. This book is a gut-wrenching account of Kierkegaard's tragic problems with women, and is a vivid portrait of a man who is snake-bit in his love life. I can especially relate to this book, being that I am not married, most likely never will be married, and am singlemindedly obsessed with sitting around reading philosophers like Kierkegaard and Jung. I can honestly attest that I broke up with the love of my life, with no regrets, just because she was preventing me from reading as much Kierkegaard as I would have liked. And this is eerily similar to Kierkegaard's own experience in this book.

Although this book still qualifies as non-fiction philosophy, it often has an autobiographical, and sometimes outright ficticious feel to it. This ultimately enhances the readability of the book, because it often refers to situations inspired by the author's own experiences; these real-life situations then help to exemplify and clarify Kierkegaard's key concepts. It is frustrating to read authors who expound one abstract theory after another and never bother to set-up a realistic situation in which these human-behavioral concepts might come into play. Kierkegaard is almost never guilty of doing this. His style is always firmly grounded in reality, and is thereby more readily translatable than most other authors from the same time period.

I highly recommend this book to anyone out there, especially someone who, like myself, has found himself torn between a philosophy-centered avocation and a love life which always seems to be trying to tear us away from our real passions and duties. If I could give it 6 stars I would. Unconditionally recommended.

A "Repetition" on Either/Or
This book is a second and more complete version of Either/Or. It is more complete in that instead of ending with a sermon (The edification to be found in the thought that before God we are all in the wrong)as does Either/Or, it actually explores the religious sphere, the highest sphere of existence in Kierkegaard's schema. As in all of Kierkegaard's writings, this is not an abstract exploratiton of the spheres, but is embodied in characters, the most characters in any of Kierkegaard's work. It is an alarmingly complex and aggravating work. The aggravation comes in with the characters occassionally demanding to know whether the reader has a life and how can s/he possibly waste his time with drivel like this. The work is divided into three parts, one for each sphere. The aesthetic sphere is represented by a updating of Plato's Symposium, with Kierkegaard repeating a number of pervious characters, (Constantine Constantinus, Victor Eremita, the Young Man, Johannes the Seducer) and introducing a new character, the Fashion designer. The subject of the speeches: Women. The second part, presenting the Ethical sphere, heralds the return of Judge William from the second part of Either/Or, this time uncomfortably sandwiched between the Aesthetic and the religious spheres. In Either/Or he is smug, but in this book he cannot pretend his position has any kind of ultimacy. The Religious calls his position constantly into question. The ethical is the relative, the religious the absolute. The Ethical claims we should repent our sins, while the religous claims that all the sins of the world are our sins, and not only collectively, but individually. We must repent the sins of the entire world. This is something the ethical cannot accept. The Religious sphere is represented by "Quidams's Diary." This is a repetition on the "Seducer's diary" which ends the first half of Either/Or. This time, however, the principal is a sufferer instead of a predator. He is hopeless, sad and sorrowful having just ended an unhappy love affair. This sorrow launches him beyond the ethical into a dark night of the soul. The Diary entries are interpursed,on the fifth of each month (Kierkegaard was born on the fifth of May) by brilliant little stories which comment on the process of the soul's healing. Frater Taciturnus (Brother Silent, perhaps related to Johannes de silento of Fear and Trembling?) also provides a commentary. The problem with the book is that once Kierkegaard claimed that he wanted his reader to expend as much effort reading his books as he did in writing them. He has made sure in this case that he would achieve this goal. If it weren't for the quality and overwhelming wealth of the content, this one wouldn't worth it. As it is, you should probably read the earlier books of Kierkegaard's authorship first. With this one, you need all the help you can get.

Average review score:

a gem of a book
This inexpensive little book is excellent for any beginning rider, containing much information, nice illustrations. It is a little gem that any horse lovin' kid would like and would learn from.

Starting Riding
I teach horseback riding year round and in summer camp. This little book is perfect for children. The drawings and explanations are accurate, clear, and easy to understand. While the book pictures children and ponies, adults who are just learning the basics of riding will find it informative and fun to read.

Studying the Clinician: Judgment Research and Psychological Assessment
Published in Hardcover by American Psychological Association (APA) (May, 1998)
Author: Howard N. Garb
Average review score:

Garb's book is the definitive work on clinical judgment.
Garb's "Studying the Clinician" is an astonishly comprehensive synthesis of nearly everything that has been done on clinical judgment in psychology. It is the successor to Wiggins's text, and it will be the definitive work on this topic for many years to come.

<P>Here are some recommendations of other readers...

I can't tell you how pleased and excited I was to have an opportunity to read the original manuscript of what will undoubtedly be one of the most important books in clinical psychology for the next decade or so. This, I predict, will be a classic.

-JERRY S. WIGGINS, PHD Emeritus Professor of Psychology, University of British Columbia

This book is essential reading for all mental health practitioners and should be on the reading list of all training programs. Dr. Garb provides a thorough synthesis of a disparate, diffuse, and complex literature in an exceptionally readable fashion.

-JONATHAN RABINOWITZ, DSW School of Social Work, Bar Ilan University, Israel

This book is a monumental accomplishment. It is easily the most comprehensive survey of the literature on clinical judgment available today. It forms a worthy successor to the esteemed earlier volume by Jerry Wiggins, with an even broader focus. Anyone seriously interested in clinical judgment in psychology! will surely wish to own this book.

-WILLIAM M. GROVE, PHD Department of Psychology, University of Minnesota

The Success and Failure of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry, 1945-46: Last Chance in Palestine (Jewish Studies, Vol 3)
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (August, 1987)
Author: Allen Howard Podet
Average review score:

Excellent work, defines the field, somewhat slanted
This is a fine study, which really defines the field. It should be read together with the book "Anglo-American Committee" by a scholar out of Israel, published by Lang in London. This (Podet) one is the far superior work, analyzing the testimony of all the members of the Committee beautifully and summarizing their thoughts better than they did themselves in the testimony. But the author's pro-Zionist slant is visible. The other (Lang) book is a good corrective.

The last chance for peace prior to the birth of Israel.
This is a brilliant study, collecting and analyzing all the available material on this important committee. The committee presented the only compromise that, at that time, would have led to peace in the Near East. The State Department and the British Foreign Office subverted the proposal until the time became too late. A splendid analysis and an important part of the story of the modern birth or rebirth of Israel.

Sun grows cold
I think the book is very interesting because we have to research about it

Very well done
I really enjoyed this book. I am not even a science fiction fan, a friend of mine is and told me to "just read it". He was right. Very well written and entertaining. Starts with the main character in a pschological rehabilitation center relearning to function after having his memory wiped clean. He struggles to find his past. Outstanding read.

The best animal book ever written
As a Vet. I would highly recommend this book. It has certainly helped me in my practise.

The one book that can keep your pet from the vet.
The information in this book really works. My dog is totally healthy and I know many of my friends who are using the recommended methods to either heal their pets or keep them healthy. It's probably the only book out there on preventive medicine for our animal family members.

The best way to help your furry friends
A friend of mine recommended this book to me because I have ayear and a half old cocker spaniel named Lily that suffered from emotional distress when ever I left her alone. She would whine and cry until I would go back into the house and take her with me. She couldn't be left alone for 5 minutes. Now that I have this book and used it's natural remedies Lily is fine. I purchased a second copy for my sister because her dog suffered from seizures. She was tired of treating him with pills that altered his behavior and made his hair fall out while he continued to suffer through the seizures. Thanks to this book he is healthy and no longer suffers from seizures. He is like a new dog. I recommend this book to everyone that truly loves their animals.

Great news for Fido and Fluffy
I have a dog and several cats and was always plagued by fleas. I didn't want to use chemical treatments and a friend told me about this book. The natural approach worked and so far this year we all are flea-free. It also gave me lots of good information on things in my house and yard that can make my animals sick. I will never again let my dog, chomp on the Xmas tree. Anyone who owns a dog or cat will need this book. The information given can keep our animals healthy so we can forget about vet bills for non-emergency illnesses since they won't get sick in the first place. I'm glad the authors wrote a book about illness prevention to complement all those books that tell us what to do after their pet gets sick.

Tales from the Saddle: Observations of the Life from a Riding Stable
Published in Paperback by iUniverse.com (June, 2001)
Authors: Mark Crowe and Howard Green
Average review score:

Tales from the Saddle - Great book!
I've read it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Many of the tales made me smile, and I was interested to learn about horses and his life with them.

Howard's great love for horses and deep satisfaction come out strongly in the book. It's great to know that some people still live the life that gives them the most pleasure instead of racing and chasing after money. He showed real sense in refusing those tempting offers to go to New York and Toronto.

It's a great book...and this comes from and Oxford graduate!

What a great book!
This is such a fun book to read....

The stories are hilarious, and it's amazing to believe that they're actually true! People never cease to amaze me....

I definitely recommend this book to everyone!

The Tao of Sex
Published in Paperback by Integral Publishing (November, 1900)
Authors: Howard S. Levy, Akira Ishihara, and Richard Stodart
Average review score:

say hello to jade
This book, though technical and flowery was a joy to read. It brought new creativity and vigor to my sexual life. A MUST for sexual dullards.

A scholarly and practical approach to an ancient treatise
This book is built around the most important ancient Chinese work on sex, the Ishimpo. It has been approached in a careful, scholarly fashion. The book is composed of introductions to the chapters of the Ishimpo, a translation, and drawings. The result is sensitive, very practical and concrete, and poetic.
